What is the VISTA Program?
VISTA or the Visually Impaired Student Technology Assistance Program was developed to help visually impaired children. Children with low vision should have the opportunity to explore and learn independently at school as well as at home. VISTA was formed to provide technological assistance so a student with low vision can achieve these goals.
What services can my child receive?
A student will receive services through The Low Vision Clinic at the Blind & Visually Impaired Center of Monterey County. Andrew Wodecki, O.D. will provide a comprehensive vision assessment to help determine what optical aids or devices are most appropriate for the student. Moonset Yu, PhD., Low Vision Service coordinator, will assist the student in the different technology and aids available. The student will then be provided with the appropriate aids and will receive training from Moonset in the student’s home.
Who is eligible to apply?
A visually impaired child age 5 to 18 years old and who attends school in Monterey County or the Pajaro area may apply.
How do I apply?
You will receive a notice that your child’s teacher feels he/she may be helped by the VISTA program. The application and Participation Waiver and Release form should be completed and mailed to the Blind & Visually Impaired Center.
How is VISTA funded?
VISTA is currently funded by grants and private donations.
When will I know if my child has been approved for the Vista Program?
You will be notified by phone or mail within two weeks of receipt of your application.
