Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Instruction

Orientation & Mobility training can be extensive or very basic. Walking out the front door to get the mail may be the most important and satisfying goal for one person. Another individual may have the ultimate goal of using orientation and mobility skills to independently get to college classes, go shopping or visit friends.

Vision loss can be disorienting and frightening. The freedom of purposeful, safe and independent movement is the goal of Orientation & Mobility instruction.

Some of the skills taught are indoor protective techniques, long cane skills, sighted guide, orientation skills, street crossing skills and the use of public transportation.
